Quantum computing by industry
Quantum will not reach every sector at the same time. Some industries need to act on encryption now. Others should watch the hardware and prepare their data. Pick yours.
Banking and finance
For a bank, quantum computing is a cryptography deadline first and a pricing, risk and portfolio tool much later.
PQC · risk · portfoliosInsurance
Insurers keep data longer than almost anyone and underwrite other companies' cyber risk, so quantum reaches them through security before it reaches their models.
PQC · risk modelsHealthcare and pharma
Pharma has the strongest long-term case for quantum simulation, and hospitals have some of the longest-lived data to protect in the meantime.
simulation · dataLogistics and transport
Routing and scheduling are the problems quantum vendors pitch most often to logistics companies, and the ones where a strong classical solver usually wins today.
routing · schedulingEnergy and utilities
Utilities run equipment for decades, so post-quantum planning matters now, while grid optimization and materials simulation remain experiments.
grid · materialsTelecommunications
For telecom operators, quantum is mostly a cryptography migration with a long tail of network equipment, and a smaller optimization story that is still experimental.
PQC · QKDManufacturing
Manufacturers have one quantum use already in production, a longer research path in materials, and a firmware and OT security problem with dates attached.
scheduling · materialsGovernment and public sector
For public agencies, quantum computing is mainly a cryptography migration with published deadlines, and a policy question about national quantum programs.
PQC · policyMining and materials
In mining, the quantum technology closest to the field is sensing, not computing, while materials simulation is a longer bet and OT security needs a plan now.
materials · sensingAgriculture and food
The strongest case for quantum computing in agriculture is long-term chemistry research, while supply chain optimization belongs to classical tools for now.

What changes by sector
Which industries will quantum computing affect first?
Quantum computing will affect industries that hold long-lived sensitive data first, through the post-quantum cryptography migration: banking, insurance, healthcare, telecom and government. Algorithmic benefits in chemistry, materials, logistics and finance come later and depend on error-corrected hardware that vendors target for around 2029 to 2033.
Why does the post-quantum deadline matter more than the hardware for most sectors?
The post-quantum deadline matters more because it is already set. NIST published the replacement standards in August 2024, and the US, the EU, the UK and the G7 have migration dates between 2028 and 2035. Supply chains and correspondent banks pass those dates on to Latin American companies.
Is my industry too early for quantum?
No industry is too early for the security side, because any company using RSA or elliptic-curve keys has to migrate. On the algorithm side, most sectors are early: the useful step now is knowing which of your problems to track, not running production workloads on quantum hardware.

Questions we get about this
My industry is not listed. Can you still help?
Probably. The post-quantum migration applies to any company that uses public-key cryptography, and the use-case method works for any operation with hard optimization or simulation problems. Write to us and describe your sector.
Do Latin American regulators require post-quantum cryptography yet?
As of September 2026 we have not found a binding post-quantum deadline from a Latin American financial or telecom regulator. Companies are still exposed through foreign clients, cloud vendors and correspondent banks that follow US, EU or G7 timelines.
